Murray takes tips from England legend.
British favourite at Wimbledon, Andy Murray, has been taking tips from David Beckham in order to prepare for the pressure that he is likely to get over the next two weeks. Beckham is an England football legend that knows pressure as his own best friend. He had to play with it every where he went when he came home after being controversially sent off in a World Cup match in 1998.
Well it has been revealed that the former England captain has been passing on his tips to Murray, who has emerged as the most likely British winner of Wimbledon in recent memory. The Scot seems to be in a very relaxed mood and should be buzzing to get going as Wimbledon starts later today.
He said: “I guess that when you start out you need to try to keep the same friends, the same people you have around you, be true to yourself and do things that are important to you. I think when you start changing as a person and getting an inflated opinion of yourself, and having a big ego, is when it becomes a problem. It happens a lot in sport nowadays and David Beckham has done a great job of not letting all the fame and pressure get to him.”
“We chatted very briefly. He seemed to know pretty much about everything that was going on and I guess he had the understanding that the tennis tour wasn’t solely about Wimbledon, which was a long way away when I spoke to him. He just wished me luck for the season, not for Wimbledon.”
It seems as though Murray has played a very smart move by having a chat with Beckham because the football great has seen it all. He has played football all over Europe and played in countries where the sport is like a religion and therefore some of the pressure and reaction from fans can be a lot more volatile than anything Murray is likely to come across while he holds the racket.
Murray simply should try to ignore the pressure and remember all of the little things that helped him get to where he is. If he worries too much about what is going on then the occasion will get to him and he will not be able to cope with the intensity of such important matches arising every other day.
He would do well to have brief and frequent chats with some pundits and people he has not heard from in a long time every single day while he is at Wimbledon. He needs distractions, while remaining focused at all of the key points. If he is to have any chance of winning this competition then we cannot heap the criticism on him that we always do every time he scrapes through a match.
It is important to remember that this guy is still human and he is still a very young lad. He won’t enjoy being jumped all over as soon as things start to go a bit pear shaped.
