February 15th, 2010, by Hiland Doolittle

Fernando VerdascoIn San Jose, second seed Fernando Verdasco found his serve just in time to deny American Andy Roddick his fourth SAP Open 2010 title in a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 upset. It was the Spaniard’s fourth tour title and 10th appearance in a finals, netting the winner $90,000.

For Verdasco, it was just his third win against Roddick in 12 matches, but continued his fast 8-1 2010 start. Verdasco struggled with his serve in the first set as Roddick gained two breaks and appeared on the way to the title. Verdasco recovered and began to land a high percentage of first serves.

Verdasco’s only loss this year was against Nikolay Davydenko in Melbourne. The win ended a 15-match losing streak against top ten players. Having won at Brisbane, Roddick was looking for his second title of the year.
