Roger Federer triumphed in straight sets at 7-6(7), 6-3. The third game of the first set saw John Isner gain two breakpoints on Federer’s serve. However Isner played very tentatively and made two unforced errors on the backhand. A 3rd breakpoint came and again went the way of Federer who played aggressively to level the set at 2-2.

Roger Federer did not earn a single breakpoint opportunity on Isner’s serve till the twelfth game of the match and it was also a set point. Isner saved it with a big serve and took it to a tiebreak. The tie break proved to be one of fluctuating fortunes as both players missed leads. Isner was the first to go up a mini break at 3-2 but handed back the advantage immediately with a deep return that took Isner by surprise. Federer then went up 4-3 but gave away lead with double fault. Federer missed two more set points but Isner gave him another opportunity by misjudging a slight mishit from Federer passing shot which landed on the baseline. This time Federer closed out the set with a big serve at 8-7.

The second set saw Federer secure the first break of serve in the mach at 3-3. Federer hit two passing shots and Isner then netted a volley at breakpoint. The first point saw umpire Mohammed Lahyani wrongly overrule a ball that was called out by linesman. Isner didn’t challenge and lost the opportunity to put pressure on Federer. Isner dropped serve again at 3-5 to lose the match.

Federer won his 19th career Masters title and equalled the record that was held by Rafael Nadal. He is now 39-2 since the U.S Open last year and has won his sixth title during that period. Isner was looking to complete the double of “singles” and doubles titles here at Indian Wells which was last achieved by Jim Courier in 1991.

The doubles title contested later was won by Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez who beat John Isner and Sam Querrey 6-2, 7-6(3). The Spaniards had also won the title three years ago and were convincing winners. The pair now has a 4-0 record in doubles finals. Nadal now has 8 doubles titles in addition to his 46 singles titles.
