Jankovic Leaves No Doubt Against Wozniacki
Princess Caroline Wozniacki’s rightful place at the top of women’s tennis will come. On Sunday, former world number one Jalena Jankovic completed a magical week at Indian Wells by serving notice to the pretty Dane the she would have to wait her turn. And, her turn has not yet arrived.
The easiest way for Jankovic to keep Wozniacki out the match was to never let her in. That is exactly the strategy the sixth seeded Jankovic employed to earn the top prize at the 2010 BNP Paribas Open.
The Serbian victor rode two easy service breaks to grab a quick 4-0 lead in the first set. She served notice that Wozniacki had nothing for which the champion did not have answers. When Wozniacki finally got on the board by holding the fifth game and completing a nice break in the sixth, Jankovic slammed the door with her third break in the seventh game. She then served out the set.
Jankovic began the second set the same way by securing an immediate break. The second seed altered her game, trying to extend points and she was able to hold serve the rest of the way, but the damage had been done. Jankovic served the 10th game out at love to leave no opening for the 19-year old Dane.
The good news for Wozniacki is that she will move ahead to the number two slot, behind Serena Williams, in the world rankings. This is the first tournament of 2010 in which the tour’s leading match winner who reached eight finals in 2009 has made a serious run.
For Jankovic, the BNP Paribas Championship is her 12th career title. She now holds a 4-0 won-lost lifetime record against Wozniacki. The champion said that the key to her championship run was her third round match victory against Italian Sara Errani, when she was just two points from being knocked out of the tournament.
“I really had a wakeup call against Errani. I think that was my most difficult match here. I cleaned up some of the things in my game and overall was getting more and more confident with each match and took the title.”
