Venus and Serena Williams won the first four games of their women’s doubles final match and then put it on cruise control the rest of the way. The 12th seeded team of
were overmatched and unnerved by the pace of play and the sheer power of the Williams sisters.
The win earned the Williams team their 12th Grand Slam title. That includes four Australian Open titles, four Wimbledon titles two U.S. Open championships and two French Open championships. Make no mistake about it, when Venus and Serna team up, the sisters play to win.
That is why the currently hold all four Grand Slam doubles crowns. Unlike most teams, Venus and Serena both serve well, they volley extremely well and their groundstrokes are the strongest in the game. Venus and Serena expect to win every match. The last time these gals lost was in the third round at Roland Garros last year when Nadia Petrova and Bethanie Matek- Sands pulled the upset.
With the win, the Williams sisters will finally be ranked number one, where they belong. Their eyes will next be focused on passing Gig Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva who hold 14 Grand Slam titles. The all-time record holders are Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver with 20 titles.
Pescheke and Srebotnik had a solid tournament. They registered wins over Cara Black and Elena Vesnina and the number 2 seeds Nuria Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. Peschke and Srebotnik had a quality win at Indian Wells earlier in the season and are a very tough, proven team.
When the underdog team got an early break in the second set, there appeared to be some hope. At 1-3, the Williams Girls ran off six straight games to make it clear who was number one and why.
This team has played together for 15 years. When other challengers play the Williams they should heed Venus’ words. “It’s really tough when play one Williams. When you have to play two, it’s really not an easy win. Kveta and Katarina played really well this whole tournament. We just played the big points a little bit better today.”
Venus is a pretty smooth spokesperson too!
