Fish and Querrey Meet For AEGON Title

Americans Mardy Fish and 7th seeded Sam Querrey will first contest for the AEGON International championship on Sunday and then discuss the mach over dinner. The winner will buy.

Querrey (6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-3) was first to earn his berth in the finals but it was did not come easily. German’s 34-year Rainer Schuettler played with purpose and showed the grass court skills that landed him in the semifinals at Wimbledon against Rafa Nadal just two years ago.

Schuettler the first set in a tiebreaker as both players held serve throughout the set. The German successfully kept Querrey on the baseline with deep groundstrokes, which he followed with deft drop shots that Querrey could not handle.

Querrey registered the first break of the match in the eleventh game of the second set. The American took advantage of two short backhands by Schuettler and then drove forehand winners down the line beyond the German’s reach.

In the final set, Querrey broke again in the third game and followed with a love hold to jump ahead 4-1. Schuettler had six opportunities to break in the match, but the winner turned him away on all chances. Querrey also registered 12 aces in the match.

The finals will be Querrey’s third of the year. He defeated playing partner John Isner for wins at Belgrade and Memphis.

Mardy Fish, who eliminated Andy Murray, played a near flawless match against 8th seed Feliciano Lopez, who ousted Rafa Nadal yesterday. Fish never lost serve in the 6-3, 6-4 convincing win.

“You can definitely go through a match without breaking him. I have sort of felt like I had a pretty good game plan against him the last three times we played. I was actually as clean as I can get out there today,” said Fish.

The 28-year old, who is ranked 90th on the tour, defeated Querrey in their only encounter three years ago. The American’s highest ranking was 17th, six years ago. The finals will be Fish’s third career grass court finals.
